Apple iTouch users forced to pay £5.99 if they want the latest update

The other day a friend of mine, who is not very computer savvy, asked me to update iTunes on his PC and then download the latest version of software for iPod Touch and iPhone (V3.0).

Being very technical and also a sad owner of an iPhone 3G I thought “No probs buddy, I can quickly do that for you”. BUT SHOCK.  Found that Apple wants to charge £5.99 for installing the latest update which covers lots of security flaws discovered in the previous version and some new “fancy features” that mask the fact that they are charging you for updates!

You should be able to get the updates for free and then if you want to watch Movies on your iPod/iTouch or be able to copy and paste (whoopee doo!), then surely have a separate option to purchase these for the extortionate amount of £5.99!!   What do they take us for!  Really!

SO let me clarify: I design a very buggy application and then offer you an update for £5.99.   So it’s up to you if you wanna surf the web with a buggy version of Safari with lots of known  vulnerabilities OR you can give me your hard earned £5.99 and have a working iTouch/iPod but feel like a right jackass.  Surely that must be illegal?

V3.0 update allows the devices to use new apps, and it also unlocks the Bluetooth functionality on the second-generation iPod Touch. Pay attention here (UNLOCK) – means that the hardware and everything else required for Bluetooth was already there apart from willingness from Apple to give it to you for free.

Just imagine if Microsoft was to charge for every single security update they release, how much would that cost you.   Apple shame on you.  Apple even charged iPod users for a Bluetooth functionality which was already built into their devices but disabled on purpose by Apple while working out how to make more money on that “technology” and how to restrict it so it uses only “Apple certified Bluetooth devices”.

Apple behaviour is really doing my head in lately. First there was an iPhone with no MMS, Skype, Bluetooth, rubbish battery life, no video recorder, poor camera quality and poor signal and they charge lots of money for products that look nice but don’t perform that well. Bluetooth headsets that cost £60+ (Like my Nokia headset is not good enough???) and then this latest stunt where they charge people £5.99 to update their ipods.

£5.99 x 152 million sold iTouch/iPods = £????? Kerching!!!!  Who is the crazy one here?  I think Apple are – and I can see how crazy they could get rolling around in all of those notes! :-/

Anyone fancies buying my iPhone?  I have decided to stay away from everything that has that tiny Apple logo stuck on it.

Please spread the word. This can not be tolerated.

What a bunch of cowboys. How can they justify that is beyond me. I will never pay for that update and if my iTouch breaks anytime soon i'll get either a zune or some other plyer.

Great news!! Apple reduced the $10.00 update charge to $4.95!! I feel so much better! NOT! WTF?? Who does this? It's bad enough that when something goes wrong with your iTouch or iPhone you can't just walk into the Apple store and have them look at it.. noooo you have to make a web appointment to talk to their "concierge".. yes you read it right! Only then will they have anything to do with you. Who does this on a $500.00 dollar product? Recently the back light went out on my iTouch and it was plain as day on what was wrong. My warranty was still good so I took it back to the Apple store only to be turned away because I didn't make an appointment for them to look at their defective product!! WTF!! Apple groupies will defend Apple to the core no matter how rotten it is but there comes a time when you have to open your eyes and see the big picture. But wait folks there's more.. I made my appointment and went back to the Apple store and the concierge agreed that the backlight went out (amazing huh?).. the good news was that they have the power to swap your defective product with a refurbished iTouch. This means that if you purchased a brand new iTouch just days ago and something goes wrong with it they can replace it with a refurbished player that can be a year or more older. What kind of warranty is that? If I buy a TV and something goes wrong with it I get a Brand new TV.. not someone elses problem. That is the case in this story.. I turned in my new iTouch for another iTouch with a button problem! Did I mention about the corrupt mail box? Yes Apple knows of this.. If your mailbox becomes corrupt you will need to reset your iTouch.. This feature takes four freaking hours! All that for one bad folder that we can't access because Apple doesn't want to add a browse feature.
But hey! great news.. The price of my update went down.
Hey Microsoft! Look at apple.. with all your updates you can make a killing!
