God of War II - Best selling game in March

Sony's previous generation gaming console is still making waves, claiming the top-selling game last month over a handful of big next-gen titles.

God of War II sold more than 833,000 copies last month. It was released on March 13, and its sales numbers are more than double the next top-selling game on the list, multiplatform shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.

God of War II also smashed the recorded sales for the Wii's anticipated Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, the next-gen release of TMNT, and a special edition of the Xbox 360's Call of Duty 3.

Rounding out the rest of the top five games in March were, in order, Guitar Hero II, Wii Play, and Motorstorm.

Ubisoft and Gearbox Software announced today that the Brothers In Arms franchise is in development for the Nintendo DS and Wii systems.

Microsoft today announced the upcoming availability of Xbox 360 Elite, a new model of the video game and entertainment system that includes a 120GB hard drive, a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) port, a high-definition cable, and a premium black finish for the console, wireless controller, and Xbox Live headset.

Ubisoft announced that Call of Juarez, previously launched on PC in Autumn 2006, will also be released for the Xbox 360 in Summer 2007.

Microsoft Announces Three Editions of Halo 3

Microsoft has confirmed that three editions of Halo 3 will be available when the game launches later this year.

Gamers will have their choice of Standard Edition ($60), Limited Edition ($70) and the Legendary Edition ($130).

First up is the plain old Standard Edition which is comprised of the standalone disc, plus a box and manual we'd wager.

Then there's the Legendary Edition which will be released "in limited quantities", according to a statement. It will come with a collectable Spartan helmet case, Halo 3 storyboard art and two bonus discs.

The first disc will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, including a Making of Halo 3 documentary, plus a look at early game concepts. It will also include an audio-visual calibration tool "never before seen on a videogame", which has been custom designed by the Halo 3 team and will allow you to enjoy high definition footage and optimised audio.

The second disc, which will only be available with the Legendary Edition, will include remastered cinematic material from Halo 2 and Halo: Combat Evovled, complete with developer commentaries.

You'll also get a featurette about a day in the life at Bungie, plus exclusive content from the Machinima artists who created Red vs. Blue and This Spartan Life.

The Limited Edition version of Halo 3 will come in a shiny metal case. Along with the first bonus disc from the Legendary Edition, you'll get a Halo fiction and art book which features a guide to the game's universe and previously unseen material.

Microsoft also confirmed that Halo 3 will arrive in shops this autumn, though they haven't said exactly when yet.

THQ Announces Warhammer 40k Licensing

THQ announced that it has entered into an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Games Workshop for the Warhammer 40,000 franchise through 2013. The deal covers PC and all handheld and console platforms, and includes a Warhammer MMO.

THQ also announced that its Austin, Texas based studio, Vigil Games, is in development on the first MMO based on the Warhammer 40,000 franchise.

THQ's critically acclaimed Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War franchise now boasts more than 2 million units in sales worldwide with the release of hybrid expansion Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade last fall. The franchise has received numerous accolades since its 2004 debut, including Game of the Year and Editor's Choice Awards, in addition to selection as an Official World Cyber Games title in 2005 and 2006.

"Our success in creating Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War as a category leading Real-Time Strategy experience for PC gamers is just the beginning," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. Fight Night Coming to Wii
"We're contemplating and we definitely feel there are some exciting things we can do with the Fight Night franchise and the Wii," game producer Michael Blank told Doghouseboxing.com. "We are looking at it right now and I am sure you will see something some time in the future on the Wii."

The game itself could take face-punching to a higher level of interactivity, much like Wii Sports boxing, which simulates your punches when you have the remote in one hand and nunchuck in the other. Something of a work out, Blank predicts.

"We want people to get a bit of workout," he added. "If you like playing sports games and are excited by sports it is a good way to give you the best of both worlds."

Rob Purchese of Eurogamer.net reports that Blank also hinted at the next Fight Night experience we could expect on Xbox 360 and PS3, estimating we would see a game as revolutionary as FNR3 was in around a year from now.

"Just like the Xbox 360 and PS3 with the punch and amazing visuals, we want to take the next leap for the next Fight Night," he said. "It will be within a year from now is my current estimate."

Fight Night Round 3 on PlayStation 3 will include much improved graphics and performance, placing the gamer in a "first person perspective", feeling each jab.

Since the project can only be in its early phases of development, it's likely that the Wii version will be part of the Fight Night Round 4 edition, which could take another year to complete, according to Blank's estimates.

Nintendo DS Sells 10 Million Units in the US

Nintendo says its Nintendo DS portable gaming system now is in the hands of more than 10 million consumers in the US.

Since launching in November 2004, nearly 9 Nintendo DS or DS Lite portable game systems have sold every minute. Following a year in which Nintendo DS taught the world to play in new ways, the video game device will school the cash-fisted buyers in the early months of 2007.

Before March ends, Nintendo will send Diddy Kong racing, obscure Wario in a series of disguises, challenge you to pimp your robo and lure the most daring into the dimmest room at Hotel Dusk.

In all, 20 new DS games will launch in the United States in the first three months of 2007.
